A Great Spirit

This weekend when I went for a walk, I saw this man with prosthetic legs riding a bike like superman.

And then I just remembered Aimee Mullins conference in San Diego in 2009.

Aimee Mullins she is a brave, strong, inspirational woman; a paralympian athlete, actress, and model, without mentioning that she’s beautiful.

She was born with a birth defect called Fibular Hemimelia. This basically means she was born with no fibula bone in either of her legs. After having both of her legs amputated below the knee on her first birthday, Aimee was able to learn to walk with prosthetic legs by the time she was two, and spent her childhood doing the usual athletic activities of her peers: swimming, biking, softball, soccer, and skiing, always alongside “able-bodies” kids.

People magazine named her one of their “50 Most Beautiful People in the World” and recently she was named the new Global Brand Ambassador for L’Oreal.

The best of all, is that she’s truly an inspiration. At least for me, she’s giving me this wake-up call that you can do wherever you want to do. Doesn’t matter what the situation is or what the odds are saying.

At her conference she said... Socially I’m consider disable, but what’s the definition of disable? and then she read the definition from the dictionary and this is what it says: “handicap, weaken, cipple, damage, hamstring, paralyze, impair, debilitate, incapacitate, prostate, unman, immobilize, put out of action, disempower.”

After reading these words, do we really want to use stereotypes? because for me this definitions don’t qualify for anyone. We all are different, could be physically or in other many ways we all have different capacities. She’s not disable, and the man that I saw during my walk is not disable.

We need to be aware of our words, We have to make sure that we don't put the first block in a wall that emotional will disable someone.

Our differences it's what makes us beautiful, we should be the architects of our own identity, it’s our power to create.

She said “Adversity is only the change to which we haven’t been adapted yet” And then she closed her conference with this: “The human spirit it's so receptive. The only true disability it's a crush spirit, an sprit that has been crushed it doesn't have hope, it doesn't see beauty and no longer has our natural child like curiosity and our ability to imagine. 

If instead we can boost our human spirit to keep hope, to see beauty in our selfs and others, to be curious and imaginative then we are truly using our power well. When a spirit has those qualities we are able to create new realities and new ways of being.”

Este fin de semana que salí a caminar; vi a un hombre en bicicleta con piernas prostéticas, y de hecho parecía que volaba como superman.

Al verlo de pronto recordé la conferencia de Aimee Mullins en San Diego en el 2009.

Aimee Mullins es una mujer fuerte, valiente, inspiradora; campeona Parolímpica, modelo y actriz. Sin mencionar que es una mujer hermosa.

Ella nació con un defecto llamado Hemimelia Peronea. Básicamente quiere decir que nació sin el hueso del peroné en sus dos piernas. Después de que le ampuratan ambas piernas  por debajo de la rodilla en su primer cumpleaños; Aimee a sus dos años aprendió a caminar con sus piernas prostéticas. Su niñez la pasó haciendo los deportes y actividades que más le gustaban como: natación, andar en bicicleta, béisbol, fútbol, esquiar, y siempre lo hizo al lado de niños “con cuerpos-capaces”.

La revista People la nombró una de “Las 50 Personas más Hermosas en el Mundo” y recientemente fué nombrada Embajadora Mundial para la marca L’Oreal.

Lo mejor de todo es que ella realmente es una inspiración. Al menos para mi; he aprendido que puedes lograr y hacer lo que quieras. Sin importar las circunstancias y las estadísticas.

En su conferencia dijo “Socialmente me consideran discapacitada” pero  cuál es la definición de discapacitado? Leyó la definición del diccionario y esto es lo que dice*: en desventaja, débil, dañado, paralizado, incapacitado, sin poder.

Después de leer estas palabras, ¿realmente queremos usar este tipo de estereotipos? Por que para mi estas definiciones no describen a nadie. Todos somos diferentes, puede ser físicamente o en muchos otros aspectos; todos tenemos capacidades diferentes. Para mí ella no esta discapacitada, ni el hombre que vi mientras caminaba.

Tenemos que estar más conscientes de nuestras palabras, tenemos que asegurarnos de no poner la primera piedra en una pared que emocionalmente va a discapacitar a alguien.

Nuestras diferencias es lo que nos hace hermosos, debemos ser los arquitectos de nuestra propia identidad, tenemos el poder de crear.

Aimee dijo “La Adversidad es únicamente cambio al que no nos hemos adaptado” Y cerró su conferencia diciendo esto: “El espíritu humano es muy receptivo. La única  verdadera discapacidad es un espíritu destrozado, un espíritu que ha sido destrozado no tiene esperanza, no ve la belleza, y no tiene la curiosidad natural de niño, ni la capacidad nata para imaginar.

Si en cambio podemos aumentar nuestro espíritu humano para mantener la esperanza, ver la belleza en nosotros y en los demás, ser curiosos y creativos realmente estaremos utilizando nuestro poder. Cuando un espíritu tiene esas cualidades, es capaz de crear nuevas realidades y formas de SER.”
